Genetics

In some cases parents may be concerned about a known or suspected genetic condition in themselves or their family. Our team of consultant geneticists are available to help parents understand information about genetic conditions and the options open to them.
Our clinical geneticists provide a diagnostic service for women whose pregnancies are at risk of conditions which may have a genetic basis. Genetic disorders include:
- Chromosomal anomalies, which cause congenital disorders, intellectual disabilities and/or reproductive problems.
- Single gene disorders such as cystic fibrosis, thalassaemia, Tay Sachs, muscular dystrophy and sickle cell disease.
- Birth malformations with a genetic component such as neural tube defects and cleft lip and palate.
- Familial cancer and cancer-prone syndromes such as inherited breast or colorectal cancer and neurofibromatosis.
The consultant geneticists work in the South West Thames Regional Genetics Service.
